Esri is about geography matters. Esri is built on the philosophy that a geographic approach to problem solving ensures better communication and collaboration. Esri through Esri Eastern Africa delivers ArcGIS technology as a flavor of web/cloud and mobile GIS. The delivery of intelligent web and mobile maps that are easily created and shared in many different ways with the ability to encapsulate and present geographic knowledge and capabilities, and deliver that to anyone, not just GIS experts is the emerging pattern that we would like to learn from each other and share via the ArcGIS online platform.
ArcGIS Online provides a free common platform to find, share, and organize geographic content and to build GIS applications. Through ArcGIS.com, the Web interface for ArcGIS Online, you can access maps, apps, and tools published by Esri and other GIS users, and share your own content with a broad community of users.
With ArcGIS Online, you can:
- Access free, high‐quality and ready‐to‐use basemaps for your GIS projects.
- Create and join groups to contribute your content and collaborate on specific projects.
- Develop Web applications quickly with ArcGIS Web Mapping APIs and ready‐to‐use ArcGIS Online content.
- Save time and money because you don't have to invest in additional infrastructure or staffing.
Esri will run a workshop at the iHub on GIS this Thursday the 11th starting 2pm. Below are some of the topics that will be covered about the Platform. Please dont forget to register for this workshop
Use the lightweight map viewer in ArcGIS.com to make and view maps that contain a basemap and, optionally, additional layers you find in ArcGIS.com. You can set the area of interest, save your maps, and share them with others. The ArcGIS.com map viewer is free and only requires a web browser and an Internet connection.
ArcGIS Explorer Online Viewer
ArcGIS Explorer Online Viewer compliments ArcGIS.com map viewer in creating and viewing web maps. However, ArcGIS Explorer Online viewer has more functionality than the ArcGIS.com map viewer. For example, you can embellish your map with bookmarks and queries and create presentations that tell a geographic story as an annotated tour around different areas of interest or highlight specific issues.
ArcGIS Flex Viewer
The ArcGIS Viewer for Flex is a ready‐to‐deploy viewer application with source code available. It is configurable, so you can easily add tools and data content without programming. You can also extend its functionality with custom widgets available from the Esri community, or create custom widgets yourself with the ArcGIS API for Flex. The ArcGIS Viewer for Flex is ideal if you want more control over the look and feel of your application. It is also a good solution if you want to host your own Web mapping applications (e.g., for enhanced security).
Develop custom applications with ArcGIS services using the Flex framework. The API enables creating applications with an intuitive, visually rich, and responsive user interface. The ArcGIS API for Flex takes full advantage of the powerful mapping, geocoding, and geoprocessing capabilities of ArcGIS services.
Develop custom applications with ArcGIS Server and Bing services using the ArcGIS API for Microsoft Silverlight/WPF. The API enables you to create highly interactive, visually rich, and expressive applications for both Web and desktop clients.
ArcGIS for mobile
ArcGIS for mobile devices extends the reach of ArcGIS to a broad range of phones and tablets including Apple iPhone and iPad, Windows Phone, and Android devices. You can use ArcGIS for mobile devices toview maps authored in ArcGIS.com and perform simple GIS functions.
